Yesterday morning, as the roosters brought up the sun, I yawned, stretched in bed, wrapped my arms around my sweetheart, and said, ” I wish you didn’t have to go to work today.” He smiled and said (in Portuguese) “I don’t, my boss gave me the day off.” Excited, I said “Really?! Ok, let’s go on a hike!”
We drank coffee, ate rice pancakes, enjoyed the warmth of the sun shining in through the kitchen window, packed up a little bag, and headed out the door. We drove to the other side of the island.
We parked at a place called Barreiro da Fanceca, and began our hike. And this hike, while not a easy hike, leads to one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.
Near the start of the hike, there are two medium-sized waterfalls, from different streams and flowing in different directions, they pour into the same pool of water (not sure where the water goes from there, maybe underground?).
Mother nature, your magic is extra strong here.
Back to the hike: The trail winds through the forest and across a little stream. Once out of the forest, WOW!!!! Standing at the top of the mountain, breathing it all in… The ocean, the cliffs, the sky, the fresh air.
We decided to brave the mud, and the steep terrain, and hike all the way down to the ocean. It was steep, it was slippery. We made it. It was awesome.
There are the ruins of an old house, which only adds to the magic.
Aside from a group of goats, we had the whole place to ourselves.
